July 2, 2005 Coca-Cola to pay Lymo for ads
Lymo announced Friday a three-month deal with Coca-Cola that will bring the transportation company $20,000 closer to its fund-raising goal and wrap three buses with advertising from a major corporation.
General Manager Myers Rollins Jr. said Lymo's $1 million goal, also announced this week, will help federal and state governments take the transportation company more seriously as it recovers from the financial scandal that ousted former Chief Executive Officer Benedict Shogaolu. Rollins said the company also wants to improve signage and the bus fleet.
The Waccamaw Regional Transportation Authority, which does business as Lymo, already has raised $75,000 from Myrtle Beach in the fund-raising campaign that will run through June, Rollins said.
The advertisements will promote Vault, marketed as combining a soft drink and an energy drink. In June, Coca-Cola began test-marketing Vault in Alabama, Michigan, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.
The campaign is valued at $36,000 for three months, and Lymo will receive $19,800, with the rest going to Highet Kracker, the firm that oversees Lymo's advertisements on buses.
"We certainly need a larger influx of revenue, and that's in part why we established the $1 million goal," Rollins said Friday. "We want to show the federal government and the state of South Carolina that we are going to take some steps in generating revenue."
Lymo is waiting on Myrtle Beach, Horry County and North Myrtle Beach to decide on financial contributions for this fiscal year. Rollins said he wants to talk to Georgetown about contributing money, also.
Lymo has recently cut routes and increased some fares to save money.

February 22, 2005 RCATS Makes Space Available For Adveritising
ASHEBORO - RCATS is plying the roads and making a little extra money with an innovative program that supplements its budget without compromising its mission.
RCATS (Regional Coordinated Area Transit System) is now making space available on its vans for advertisers.
The transit system provides transportation for Randolph and Montgomery counties' disabled and disadvantaged residents.
Russ Keeney, RCATS transportation director, said the system provided 75,000 one-way trips in just Randolph County last year. Without RCATS, many of the area's elderly, handicapped and economically challenged residents would never be able to make it to doctor's appointments and other important day-to-day functions.
RCATS receives funding from state and federal transportation programs as well as from United Way, and to a degree, from Randolph County government, said Keeney.
Working with Highett Kräcker Design in Lumberton in a program that started 18 months ago, RCATS now makes its high-top and mini-vans available for advertisers. Since the program began roughly 18 months ago, it has generated a little over $ 3,000 for RCATS.
"That's money that wasn't in the budget," said Keeney.
Trevor Kräcker, one of the firm's owners, said his company has found a niche that others have overlooked. Highett Kräcker Design is a full-service design shop specializing in custom layouts and marketing solutions in outdoor advertising, graphic design and website services for the public and private marketplace.
The company started a program of working with local governments to capitalize on the availability of ad space on public transportation vehicles about three years ago, said Kräcker. Now Highett Kräcker Design works with transit systems across North and South Carolina, including Greenville, N.C. and the University of North Carolina-Pembroke.
Highett Kräcker Design just landed a contract to work with Myrtle Beach, S.C., said Kräcker.
Keeney likes the functionality of the program. RCATS is not involved with any part of the management. Kräcker's company solicits and screens participating advertisers. Highett Kräcker Design develops the advertising material and installs the ads on the vehicles.
So far, local clients have included Randolph Community College, JobLink, Stuart-Bowman Auto Centre Cadillac-Mazda and a local medical supplies dealer.
In return, over the life of the three-year contract, RCATS receives 50 percent of the proceeds from the ads.
RCATS has 10 high-top vans available for ad space. Keeney said while the young program has seen some good response so far, he would love to see more companies participate.
"It's a win-win program for everyone involved," he said.
